The Unnatural Act of Forgiveness (1st of 2)

On forgiveness vs. pardon and punishment:

"The law cannot forgive, for the law has not been wronged, only broken; only persons can be wronged. The law can pardon, but it can only pardon what it has the power to punish." - W.H. Auden, "The Prince's Dog" (p. 201)

Jesus Christ: "Forgive us our sins, as we have forgiven those who sin against us." (Matthew 6:12, New Living Translation)

"How shalt thou hope for mercy, rendering none?"
Shakespeare, "Merchant of Venice"
